The University of California Irvine have announced that they will be launching an Overwatch based scholarships to it’s future students later this year.
The University also is home to an eSports program, in which it’s students can play and train within a dedicated arena, in a game of their choice.
Selected students will gain this scholarship, which will cover tuition fees amongst other costs, reports ESPN. Teams will be expected to attend regular meetings, have feedback and advice from trainers and psychologists, attend competitions and community service – along with other projects.
Mark Deppe, acting director of UCI eSports said: “We are very excited to take this next step in growing our scholarship program for top gamers who are also strong students and great members of our community,” said Mark Deppe, acting director of UCI eSports. We look forward to connecting the excitement generated by our competitive teams to advance efforts along our other pillars: Academics, Community and Entertainment.”
The University of California was not the first University to offer eSports in an educational setting, as the University of Staffordshire offers a degree within eSports – which focuses on business within eSports, rather than training to become the best of the best.
Either way, where can I sign up?! I really wish that this was an option while I studied at Portsmouth Uni!
